Why a Fiction Author Should Increase their Vocabulary
There is a vocabulary that fiction authors use regularly. For you to have a big number of words to choose from when writing, you need to learn other vocabularies. When you are a fiction writer it is best if you use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives that best bring out the writing. What makes up good writing is how well you put the words together and how the words themselves are. When a novel you are reading is engaging, you will easily get into it. After reading and enjoying the novel, reread it again. The point of this is to analyse how the work has been written. The aspect of writing is where you should focus on, they include how the plot and characters were developed and the technical aspects like grammar. Be mindful of the fact that American and British authors write differently.
It could be their punctuation, spelling and the difference in the words that are being used. For example, among is used by the Americans and amongst by the British. Writing for either the American readers or British readers each have their standard of rules that you should stick to.
Fiction authors can and should expand the base of the vocabulary that they use. Doing this is possible when they are reading another author’s work. A new vocabulary that you come across should be noted. Most authors do not do this even though it is general knowledge. Besides it being a logical thing to do, it is one way of building your vocabulary. Consider getting a notebook or use any other means you desire to make categories that suits your needs. Anytime people are talking or when there is a dialogue on the TV or when you are reading, you should concentrate and listen keenly. Be mindful of verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns being used. You will be amazed about the words you already use, the ones you didn’t know about and those you never thought of using. It is also great to keep a list of words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use. When describing the action of the eye, use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room.
You will be able to describe vividly what is going on internally and externally regarding your characters if you take notes of such words and phrases. Such a list will help you rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary. The first draft you make should use this list.
